Bhatkal: Bunder’s jetty partially collapses; Police restrict vehicular movement, Fishermen raise alarm

The jetty, which was constructed around 4–5 years ago using cement concrete without any metal reinforcements, is believed to have weakened at the base, leading to the collapse. Large cracks have developed across the concrete surface, making it dangerous for people to walk over, especially during nighttime when visibility is low. Fisherwomen who continue selling fish on the jetty until 9–10 p.m. and the general public visiting the area are now at considerable risk.

Authorities have placed red stones as barriers and restricted vehicle movement in the area. While the police have installed barricades at certain spots, public movement on the weakened jetty continues, raising safety concerns. With the monsoon season expected to begin within the next month and a half, the threat of further collapse looms large

Four companies which form part of troubled cinema operator Cineworld have had restructuring plans approved by a High Court judge, staving off the threat of administration.

Cine-UK Ltd, Cineworld Cinemas Ltd, Cineworld Cinema Properties Ltd and Cineworld Estates Ltd, which are parts of the UK arm of the world’s second-largest cinema chain, were at risk of entering administration if the restructuring was not approved, the court heard.

The approval means that £16 million of new equity funding from the companies’ indirect parent firm will be released to fund their immediate financial needs, with further funds of up to £35 million also to be made available.
