Top Priority Is To Pull India Away From China : New US Ambassador Nominee

Washington, D.C. — Sergio Gor, U.S. President Donald Trump’s nominee for Ambassador to India, stated on Thursday that pulling India closer to the United States and away from China would be a “top priority” for Washington. In his remarks to reporters, Gor emphasized the strength of Indo-U.S. relations compared to India’s ties with Beijing.

Gor highlighted that the ongoing trade negotiations aim to open the Indian market for American crude oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), remarking on India’s middle class being larger than that of the entire U.S.Gor also noted the scheduled visit of India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to Washington, where trade discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer are expected to bring a hopeful deal soon. Despite some current trade hiccups, Gor expressed confidence that an agreement would be resolved over the coming weeks.

He critiqued India’s protectionist policies and regulatory barriers as obstacles to fully realizing U.S.-India economic partnership but vowed to work toward fair, reciprocal, and beneficial trade if confirmed as ambassador. Gor also stressed India’s importance for regional and global stability, citing its geography, growing economy, and military strength as critical factors, and described the U.S.-India partnership as one that “will define the 21st century.” At 38, he would become the youngest U.S. ambassador to India.Additionally, Gor highlighted the personal rapport between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it “unique” and reflecting the administration’s commitment to strong bilateral relations despite recent friction over tariffs and energy policy. In summary, Gor’s ambassadorial vision prioritizes strengthening strategic, economic, and energy ties with India while countering Chinese influence in the region through closer U.S.-India cooperation.
