Goyal met with Ambassador Jamieson Greer (USTR) and Sergio Gor (US Ambassador-designate to India) to discuss key trade issues. According to the government, the meetings were\u00a0<em>constructive<\/em>\u00a0and both sides exchanged views on the possible contours of the deal, agreeing to maintain engagements to expedite its conclusion. US-based business leaders reportedly showed confidence in India\u2019s growth prospects and expressed interest in expanding investments.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"308\" height=\"164\" src=\"https:\/\/konkanwood.com\/kok\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/images-11-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-963\" style=\"width:436px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/konkanwood.com\/konkani\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/images-11-2.jpeg 308w, https:\/\/konkanwood.com\/konkani\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/images-11-2-300x160.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tariff and Visa Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The talks come at a difficult time in India\u2013US relations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In July, US President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0imposed\u00a025% tariffs\u00a0on Indian goods, later increasing them to\u00a050% in August, citing India\u2019s continued import of Russian oil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Trump administration recently announced a\u00a0$100,000 fee on new H1-B visa petitions, a move expected to heavily impact Indian IT workers, who make up over 72% of H1-B holders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From\u00a0October 1, 2025, the US will impose a\u00a0100% tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical imports, directly affecting India, which hosts the largest number of USFDA-approved plants outside the US.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India\u2019s Concerns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India has expressed strong reservations against opening up its\u00a0agriculture and dairy sectors, which are critical for rural livelihoods. These remain sensitive issues in the negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, India\u2019s\u00a0pharmaceutical sector\u00a0is particularly exposed to the new tariff measures. In FY25 (April\u2013December), India exported\u00a0\u20b91.87 lakh crore ($21.7 billion)\u00a0worth of pharma products, with the\u00a0US being the single largest market. Overall global pharma exports from India in 2024\u201325 stood at nearly\u00a0$30 billion, with formulations and biologics accounting for 79% of shipments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Way Forward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Talks for a \u201cjust, balanced, and mutually beneficial\u201d agreement began in March 2025, with the goal of finalizing the first phase by\u00a0October\u2013November <strong>2025<\/strong>.
